Gyo-O

My trip to Gyo-O turned out to be an adventurous dining experience.  This trip I ate fresh-water eel, an assortment of raw fish, and sea urchin.

BBQ Fresh Water Eel on Rice, with a Soft Boiled Egg
Chopped Up Raw Fish with a Soft Boiled Egg
Uni! a.k.a Sea Urchin - Tasted rich and creamy.  Had an acquired taste.
You either love it or hate it.  It looks kind of weird too.

Overall, the Gyo-O has a large an extensive menu, and the food is worth trying.  I was quite satisfied with my experience here.  If you love Raw Fish, Japanese Food, Sushi, and enjoy trying something different, I would highly recommend Gyo-O.

On my next visit I'd like to try the Chirashi Don, I'd probably stick to Salmon and Tuna.

Quejos

Say "hello" to Hawker's Delight's neighbor, Quejos (Kay-Joes)!

Well, after a trip to Hawker's Delight, I decided to pay a visit to Quejos.

Quejos sells a variety of baked goods, but they mainly specialize in baking Brazilian Cheese buns.  The Buns are made of Manioc Flour, and they're wheat-free and gluten-free.  They also sell non-dairy baked goods too.

8 pieces of Frozen Dough to take home! - It comes with simple baking instruction. (Flavor - EXTRA cheese)

After following instructions and baking, this is how it turned out.

If you enjoy cheesy foods, you may enjoy the Extra Cheese Brazilian bun.  The texture of the bun is very dense, crunchy on the outside, and very chewy on the inside. (I would say the chewiness of the bun is somewhat similar to the texture of mochi, which is the closest comparison I could think of)  The texture is definitely very different compared to regular bread.  I think it's worth trying out, it's always good to different types of foods at least once.  The bun itself is quite tasty, it had a very cheesy and buttery like taste.

One thing I would like to mention is that you should eat the bread while it's FRESH and warm, don't let is sit out and get cold, otherwise it turns as hard as a rock.

Hawker's Delight

What I ate at Hawkers Delight
Lontong Sayur Lodeh
Mee Pok

Hawker's Delight serves delicious tasty meals for a good price.  Eating here is similar to eating at hawker center in Singapore.  This place seems to be set up similarly to a Hawker Stall...from the way you order your food, the large menu above the cashier, the kitchen, to the way seat yourself.   This place is great if your in a rush, or if you just want to have a quick meal.  The service is fast, the food's served quick, and people usually leave after they finish up their meal.  This is why I am always able to get a seat whenever I go, especially when it is quite busy.  This is the type of place where you come just for the food and value, not the ambiance.

Note:  Hawker's Delight is cash only

The Dirty Apron

The Dirty Apron, was once just a cooking school, but not anymore.  It is now a cooking school + delicatessen!

pistachio cheesecake brownie

So I was wandering town, and found myself craving something sweet, so I strolled down Beaty St. to the Dirty Apron.  As I entered, I began to browse through their selection of artisan sandwiches, and delectable desserts. The one thing that caught my eye was the Pistachio Cheesecake Brownie.  It sounded delicious because I am a fan of cheesecake, brownies and pistachio.  I had to order it!   The texture of the brownie, was in between chewy and cakey.  It tasted both sweet and savory, the flavors from the chocolate, and cheesecake complemented each other well.

If you're in the mood for a twist on the brownie, head over to The Dirty Apron.  On my next visit, I'd like to try their Lavender Zucchini Chocolate Cake, it sounds delicious...yum!

The Greedy Pig

Am I a Greedy Pig? Probably... I feel like a glutton sometimes.  I can't help that Vancouver is a culinary hotspot surrounded by awesome food.

I decided to go to the Greedy Pig because there was one particular item on the menu that caught my attention.  It was the Marrow (a.k.a God's Butter).  I have never had Marrow before and I was dying to try it out.
marrow & toast - roasted marrow, garlic confit, truffle oil, arugula, bacon twists & sour dough

So I ordered a plate of marrow because it seemed like everyone on food network was eating this so called "god's butter."  With a description like that, how can you possibly pass up this divine dish? I just had to try it. I can tell you now, that this stuff is rich. The marrow was so smooth, it just melts away as you eat it.  The combination of the crunchy sourdough and the smooth marrow complemented each other well.  The arugula added a fresh touch to the dish, it was a good palate cleanser.

pulled pork sandwich - braised pork shoulder, slaw & tangy bbq sauce on potato hamburger bun

The last dish I ordered was the pulled pork sandwich.  It's classic comfort food, and I felt at the time, that it would go well with my marrow & toast dish.  I shared half my pulled pork sandwich, because I wanted to save  some room for dessert.  The pulled pork sandwich was very tasty.  It had a tangy, slow cooked, meaty flavor.  Each bite went will with the slaw.

Over all I do recommend a Greedy pig experience.  Go be adventurous! Try the Marrow.

Next time I'd like to try the baked brie!

Congee Noodle House

Some foodpics from my last visit to Congee Noodle House on Broadaway.
Fried Crab - Delicious crab seasoned with salt, chili and garlic.
Wonton Soup + Congee with shredded pork and preserved egg.

My last visit to Congee Noodle House happened to be a late night snack with a few of my friends.  At that time, it seemed like every other table had an order of deep fried crab.  So we decided to go ahead and order a plate of deep fried crab for ourselves.  It weight close to 3 pounds (A decent size), and was deep fried to perfection.  I would never order crab less than 2 pounds.  What's the point of having a skinny light crab?  You will just end up with shells and a plate of disappointment.

The food at CNH is pretty good for the price you pay. It's not the fanciest place in town, but the food tasty.

CNH is located right in front of the B-line.  How convenient!

My favorite dishes include the congee, wonton, fried tofu, and clams with black bean sauce.

Bella Gelateria: Old-World Handcrafted Gelato

I love Gelato! People tell me that gelato contains less fat than ice cream, is that true? It probably is... In my opinion gelato taste better.  The flavors of good gelato is more intense, and the texture is much more lighter and softer than ice cream.

Bella Gelateria is probably one of best Gelato shops in town.  I love the flavors, texture, and freshness of the gelato.
Blood Orange and Matcha
Mango, Chocolate, Hazelnut - Hazelnut is delicious!!

Everytime I visit, I try to order a different/new flavor. If you have any recommendations for gelato flavors please let me know! Thanks!

I highly recommend that you try Bella Gelateria out!

Benkei Ramen

If your looking for a quick ramen fix, try heading towards Benkei Ramen, for a nice bowl of tasty Ramen.   What I like about Benkei is the fast service, consistency, and the value of the Ramen.  You can pretty much enjoy a meal for less than $10.
Miso Ramen with Egg - The eggs delicious!
Pork Gyoza

Benkei Ramen definitely beats instant ramen by a mile.
